January is Board Appreciation Month

The Ohio School Boards Association is celebrating School Board Recognition Month in January 2017 to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our society.

School Board Recognition Month honors the members of Ohio’s more than 700 city, exempted village, local and joint vocational boards of education and educational service centers governing boards for their commitment to providing quality public education to Ohio’s school children.

Warrensville Heights City School District is joining with other districts throughout the state to recognize the important contributions school board members make to their communities.

“Ohioans benefit every day from the dedicated energies and countless hours devoted by a group of more than 3,400 men and women across the state,” said Superintendent Donald J. Jolly II. “These public servants are elected to serve by local citizens and receive little compensation for their tireless efforts. These men and women are the local school board members of Ohio.”

The school board’s main goal, is to support student achievement, Jolly added.
To achieve that goal, the board focuses on the following needs:
  • Creating a vision for what parents and citizens want their school district to become and how to make student achievement the top priority
  • Assessing whether schools achieve their goals, and whether students are learning
  • Accounting for the outcomes of decisions and by tracking progress and reporting results
  • Aligning the use of the district’s human and financial resources
  • Creating a safe and orderly climate where students can learn and teachers can teach
  • Collaborating to solve common problems and to support common successes
  • Focusing on continuous improvement by questioning, examining, revising, refining and revisiting issues related to student achievement
“These people unselfishly contribute their time and talents toward the advancement of public education. Even though we are making a special effort during January to show appreciation for our school board members, we recognize their contributions reflect a year-round effort on their part. They are dedicated individuals who are committed to improving student achievement and to fighting for the best for all of our students,” Jolly said.
