WWHS Juniors Begin Ohio University's Aspiring DOctors Precollege Program

On Tuesday, October 25, high school juniors from Warrensville Heights High School, John F. Kennedy PACT High School, and Tri-C’s High Tech Academy kicked off the 11th grade Aspiring DOctors Precollege Program at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine!

The day started with a presentation from the Cleveland Clinic called Teen Cancer 101 which revealed how common behaviors contribute to cancer and how to prevent skin and lung cancers. OUHCOM’s nurse educator then taught the students about open and closed communication which culminated in a patient history lab.

The high school students got their first taste of being a doctor by stepping into the HCOM exam rooms and conducting a short patient interview! Afterward, students learned about health disparities among minorities populations with medical anthropologist, Dr. Sarah Rubin. Cleveland Clinic employee, Lisa Higgenbottom, then spoke with the students about career opportunities in rehabilitation therapies and then allowed them to tour the rehab facilities. All students were paired up with their medical student buddies for lunch in order to learn more about preparing for college and medical school.

To wrap up the day, students learned the dos and don’ts of writing a college application essay and got some time to brainstorm good topics for their essays.

Of her experience, one WHHS student said, “It was fun getting to ‘play doctor’ for a day. Hopefully one day I get to do the real thing!” Another student from High Tech Academy “…enjoyed learning about a different field that [she] didn’t really even know existed.”
