Spring STEAM Fair Spotlights Scholars’ Accomplishments

The WHCSD spotlighted the educational accomplishments of scholars at its first annual Spring STEAM Fair during the evening on Wednesday, May 18th at the High School. The celebration reflected the district’s STEAM focused curriculum, which provides an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts and math in the classroom. High School scholar Senica Smith served as the Master of Ceremony for the event, which was kicked off by an electrifying performance by the High School Marching Band and Dance Team. Music Teacher Denise Edwards then introduced the Middle School Dance Team, which provided an impressive choreographed performance of their own.

The festival also highlighted the district’s partnership with Progressive Arts Alliance, a non-profit group which seeks to educate students by integrating the arts into the core curriculum. 2nd graders from John Dewey performed modern dance techniques to demonstrate their knowledge of various geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals, triangles, the letter ‘Q’, hexagons and pentagons. Sixth and seventh grade scholars worked with members of the Progressive Arts Alliance to create stop-motion videos for their science projects, which included writing the script, filming, editing, and using a laser cutter to create design elements. A compilation of the scholars’ videos was presented to great applause by those in attendance.

5th grade scholars from Eastwood Elementary took audience members on a trip around the world by performing a variety of ballroom dances including the foxtrot, rumba, tango and meringue. The performance was a culmination of a 10-week workshop sponsored by Dancing Classrooms, a non-profit organization which uses ballroom dancing to teach social awareness and self-esteem.

The Spring STEAM Fair also included tables displaying scholar artwork and science projects. A group of district staff members evaluated each science project and awarded Science Fair Awards to the following scholars:

Darron Roberson - 6th grade

Theadis Reagins - 6th grade

Marching Machine – by Marching Band (High School)

The district would like to thank our teachers, parents and community members for attending our Spring STEAM Fair and supporting our scholars!
