Cell Phones, Safety & Academics at WHCSD

Greetings,

This school year, administration has noticed an increase of scholar cell phone use in our schools that contributes to academic disruption and safety concerns. At Warrensville, your child’s academic success is our mission–and their safety one of our top concerns. To better facilitate learning in our schools, the Board of Education and administration teams are considering an updated cell phone use policy.

Proposed Cell Phone Use Policy

Scholars will not be permitted to use their cell phones during the school day. When walking into the building, scholars will lock their cell phones into “pouches” which can only be opened by security or office personnel. The phones would stay locked, but in the scholar's possession, throughout the day until dismissal. The tools for this policy will be provided by the company Yondr

Exceptions would be made for the following:

  • Valid medical reasons to have a cell phone (diabetes blood sugar monitoring, etc..)

We understand that this change may bring questions and concerns. We want this policy to create peace of mind for parents, and decrease the amount of academic and safety incidents in our schools. This survey will be reviewed by district and building level administrators, and is your opportunity to provide feedback before the official policy is finalized. The survey will remain open until Monday, January 2nd.

On Thursday, January 5, 2022, at 7 pm, we invite all parents and families to attend a Special Parent Meeting on Cell Phone and Academics in the Warrensville Heights High School Auditorium to learn about how we will address concerns. This meeting will be livestreamed on YouTube as well.

Thank you for your consideration and continued support as we strive to provide the best academic experience possible for your scholar.

In Service,

Donald J. Jolly, II

Superintendent
