WHHS Seniors Return to OU-HCOM for Second Visit as Aspiring DOctors Precollege Program Participants

On Tuesday, November 1, the WHHS 12th grade students in the Aspiring DOctors Precollege Program were back on campus for a day filled with hands-on activities and presentations!

The morning started with a visit from John Carroll University’s admissions representative. Students got many of their questions answered regarding the application process, life on campus, academic majors, and more! After that, students participated in team building exercises and workshops. They started by brainstorming positive characteristics of the ideal team member and the negative qualities to avoid when working in teams. That was followed by a workshop on using effective listening and communication techniques with those who are different from themselves.

Before lunch, the seniors were in the anatomy lab learning more about thoracic anatomy with OU-HCOM gross anatomist, Dr. O’Reilly. Students learned about the different parts of the thorax and were able to view preserved specimens. Students then met up with their medical student buddies to eat lunch and talk about what they’ve been up to since their last visit. The weather was so nice that students went outside for their next activity – a career presentation from Warrenville Heights Emergency Medical Services!

Students loved hearing from EMS, learning more about what they do on a day-to-day basis, and touring the ambulance and fire truck. We even had a special guest when Mayor Sellers dropped by to speak with the students and see them in action! The last presentation of the day came from South Pointe Hospital’s Diabetes Education department. Students received a comprehensive overview on the disease and learned more about healthy lifestyle choices that can help prevent Diabetes. The students will be back on campus in January.
