HS students participate in Aspiring DOctors Precollege Program

Ten Warrensville Heights High School sophomores are participants in Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (OU-HCOM) Aspiring DOctors Precollege Program.

During the first session, the scholars learned in-depth about the program, learned the ins and outs of osteopathic medicine (the treatment of medical disorders through manipulation and massage of bones, joints and muscles), and how to start preparing for admission to medical or other health professional schools.

The scholars enjoyed an interactive presentation about stretching techniques and osteopathic manipulative medicine which is the clinical skill and diagnostic/treatment approach differentiating D.O. physicians from M.D. physicians. D.O. physicians are fully licensed and practice in all areas of medicine. D.O.s take a holistic approach and are trained to listen and partner with their patients to help them attain and maintain good health. According to the American Osteopathic Association, D.O.s receive special training in the musculoskeletal system. M.D.s practice the classical form of medicine – focused on the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.

Scholars also toured OU-HCOM’s anatomy lab with Gross Anatomist Dr. Jim Reilly. Dr. O’Reilly introduced the purpose of the anatomy lab and the types of activities medical students participate in. The students were particularly interested in the process for donating deceased bodies to science.

The session wrapped up with a mock college admissions activity where students worked in groups to decide which qualities colleges seek most in applicants.

The Heritage College’s Aspiring Doctors Precollege Program is a comprehensive, three-year program targeting high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to foster their interest in pursuing careers in science and health. Students in the program, visit the Cleveland campus each year starting in 10th grade to learn about osteopathic medicine and other health care careers through participation in academic enrichment and hands-on learning activities. Lectures, hands-on clinical activities, case-based learning lessons and college/career readiness workshops are delivered by the Heritage College, Cleveland faculty, staff and medical students.
